Pointing Griffon
Teaching your dogs to stay close in the woods?
I have a 6 month old wirehaired pointing griffon puppy who is very very good about listening to commands. If we are at the dog park or in an open area he comes when called 99.99 percent of the time. He will down across a field by signal and everything. The problem is however that whenever we get into the woods its like everything flies out of his head. He just runs down the trail not even looking back for me. I did this twice before I realized I better not or i’ll lose him. I’ve had him out of the 30 footer in the woods and he listens well with that. Does anyone have any ideas on how to start training him now to stick around in the woods? I would really prefer not to use electricity, as i’m willing to put in hours and hours if it will work. I really want to hike and mountain bike with him next year when hes old enough. Thanks so much!
Until a dog has reached the stage of its obedience training where it will recall on command, first time, every time, with distractions that a wooded area would have in abundance, it is better to keep a puppy safe & continue to work on a long lead to embed the recall command.
When you start to work off lead, choose an area with few distractions that would cause a dog to break focus & gradually build up the level of distraction over time.
