Chesapeake Bay

When I have a child will my Chesapeake Bay Retreiver treat it like a human or a new puppy?
I know this sounds like a bizarre question. Here’s the deal: My 13 month year old chesapeake is kept in our patio whenever my 1 year old niece comes over because she’s allergic. I noticed that when she’s over my chessie starts barking and acting up, she even started barking at my niece through the glass door. Will this manifest into jealousy towards children her age? Should I expect aggressive/jealous behavior towards my own children? I’ve heard of pitbulls acting aggressivley towards new members of the family and it worries me.
I believe your dog’s barking at your niece out of sheer frustration. This dog sees a new person (or people) in her house and she’s not able to interact with them. This doesn’t mean she’ll be jealous of a new baby.
If your dog is a well-adjusted, friendly dog, you shouldn’t anticipate problems. A good idea once the baby is born, is to bring home a blanket with the baby’s scent on it for your dog to smell. When the baby comes home, someone sit down holding the baby and let the dog get acquainted – she needs to get the baby’s scent. She’ll see her people holding this baby and come to realize that the baby is yours and belongs, therefore she’ll be accepting.
You have to use some common sense in never leaving a baby or toddler alone with the dog – an adult needs to supervise.
